Nicaragua Projects
(We are currently not operating in Nicaragua because the politcal situation)

Colegio Bautista School, La Concha, Nicaragua
Since June of 2000, we have conducted an annual, one-week dental clinic at this Baptist sponsored, K-12 school.  Our sustained efforts have improved dental health in the entire student population.  On a space available basis, we also provide dental services to the surrounding community.  All service is provided on a no-fee basis.
Universidad Catolica (UNICA),
Managua, Nicaragua

The Foundation has established a close working partnership with UNICA, a small Catholic sponsored university, which has both a dental and medical school.  While in Nicaragua each year, our Foundation’s 50+ healthcare team volunteers join UNICA’s dental students and faculty to operate a number of clinics throughout the country.  We routinely provide dental treatment to over 900+ patients in just five days.

Aproquen, Managua, Nicaragua
The Foundation has developed an on-going relationship with the Association for the Burned Children of Nicaragua (APROQUEN) which provides medical treatment and rehabilitation to burned children and those with cleft palates at no charge.  Each year, APROQUEN and its affiliated Hospital Metropolitano provide hospital operating rooms where our Foundation’s volunteer anesthesiologists and pediatric dentists provide “no-fee” dental care to burned and special needs children under general anesthesia.  We have named this ongoing initiative “The Nathan Project” after the deceased son of one of our Board members, Dr. Hank Mercado.  Nathan, being  Down Syndrome, was our inspiration. We have helped hundreds of special needs children who otherwise would receive no dental care.

Esquipulas Clinic, Managua, Nicaragua
Dr. Brian Novy, a Foundation board member, is the Director of Practice Improvement at the DentaQuest Institute, and an adjunct associate professor of restorative dentistry.  He also serves on the ADA Council of Scientific Affairs, acts as the chair of the CAMBRA coalition, is a member of the AGD and a clinical evaluator for the Catapult Group.  Dr. Novy, in conjunction with the Foundation, has taken the study of early childhood caries internationally. The chosen patient population is the children of the public school in Esquipulas, suburb in Managua, Nicaragua.  Joining Dr. Novy and the Foundation for this collaborative, are the dental staff and students of UNICA.  We are encouraged by the early study results.

National Nicaragua Dental Conference, Managua, Nicaragua
Healthcare education is an important part of our mission.  Our Foundation dentists have lectured to Nicaraguan students at UNICA and UNAN-LEON dental schools.   Since 2012, we are providing speakers to the annual Nicaraguan National Dental Congress held in Managua.

Mission of Hope
Chiquilistagua, Nicaragua

Starting in 2014, the Foundation began hosting an annual dental clinic at the Mission Esperanza in the community of Chiquilistagua, an impoverished area located in the outskirts of Managua.  This facility was built by the North Country Mission of Hope, Plattsburg, New York.  Responding to the fatal effects of Hurricane Mitch on the impoverished villages of Nicaragua, construction began on this facility in 1998.  We have had an excellent response from the community and support from the mission staff.
